Issue With Auto Presidio
After a couple months of use, my Benchmade Presidio doesn't lock shut and can be opened if I tug on the blade.
I'm assuming the spring mech is broken or messed up in some way.
Any advice is appreciated. It's not under warranty since it was used when purchased...
Thx for the input

BM will probably fix it for you anyway ......give them a call.
The big issue here is where do you live .......if you live in a state where autos are legal.
BM cant ship a auto knife to a state where there not legal.0 -
Something seems to be keeping the axis bar from seating. I'm wondering if the spring is torqued in some way? Regardless, Benchmade's warranty doesn't just extend to the original purchaser so far as I've seen. Take the knife to a dealer and ask them to return it for repair. That will be your best avenue.
If you're in Oregon, then call ahead and get shipping requirements and they'll fix it and ship it directly back to you. Same goes if you're active duty military or firefighter/EMS/police.0 -
appreciate the answers, based on this link below looks like autos are legal here in NC.

So it's as simple as taking it to a Benchmade dealer and they handle the shipping to Benchmade?
Or can I ship direct? How is cost determined?0 -

Call Benchmade itself for a firm correct answer.

Ask your local BM dealer to send it in for you. 0 -
Soak it in machine oil or kerosine overnight and check to see that everything is tightened, not too tight. Dirt and fluff from your pocket can do strange things to automatic knives. 0 -
If you can't send it in due to the laws, you can buy replacement springs at knifekits.com
Its simple to take an auto apart, its a little more involved to put one back together.
Got a friend in Oregon?0 -
i checked it for tightness and soaked in overnight, still no difference.
i'm thinking about selling it...can't recall how much I paid for it. due to the spring issue, how much do you guys think it would be worth?0 -
Sparky, much like selling a car; the potential buyer would pay more if it was in working shape.
If you're not LE or serving military, the best route for repairing this knife would be to bring it to a dealer and have them send it in for you. I would NOT mail it directly, and definitely not through USPS, which is against the law. (UPS is a good alternative in general, just saying)
Your knife is a user, so the worth is debatable, and far less than the MSRP of $245. Why not get it fixed and go from there instead?
You bought it because you liked it I would think. Good luck!0 -
Will it completely close?
Will the safety keep it closed?
Does it spring open fully and lock when open?
If those are all "No"s, then you'd be selling if for parts.
Best bet like others already said, have a dealer send it in to get fixed. Then you've got a great user back.0 -
You're probably not going to get a lot for it like it is, maybe $50 or so. I agree getting a dealer to send it in for you would be the way to go, if you can.
The other option would be to take it apart and try fixing it yourself, there may just be something out of place or some crud jamming up the workings.0 -
Yeah, $50 of parts would be about tops, IMO, as-is. 0 -
appreciate the advice...it's a good knife and not worth dumping b/c of this issue.
debating on taking it apart since I haven't found a benchmade dealer in my area yet.0 -

Give it a whirl. The worst that can happen is you turn it into a manual. That's not as cool but it would still be better than it is now.
Just my opinion of course. Only you can decide what would be best.0 -

With all due respect to Trailboss, I would not take it apart as that would void your BM warranty for ever. If you are either Police or EMS all you need to do is to register with BM and fill in the correct form and send it with the knife or as previously advised just drop it into a dealer.
Failing all that you could sell the knife to some one that has the Authority to own and carry an Auto (or one that is in a State that allows it).
But that's my 2 cents worth...

Just fyi for anyone with this knife. I dont recomend taking it apart as the automatic spring takes so much force to get back together that it is almost impossible to do by yourself. Its almost like you need two sets of hands without the proper tools. I have first hand experience with this. I ended up sending it to benchmade for $25 and got it back in abou a month. 0 -
I have a 9051BK and so far the spring is strong and good to go. Personally i would be afraid of taking my auto knife apart and having the spring hit me or something lol. That is the main thing that concerned me with getting a auto knife. What is the failure rate of the springs used in the auto knifes and would dirt and dust slow the blade down when it is deployed. Benchmade has a awesome warranty so i know i am covered. But so far my knife is good to go.
