The edges on the knives you use are spectacular. The arm hair just falls off, or at least appears to.

I have no complaints about the factory Benchmade edges, but I don't think I've ever received a Benchmade that would shave like that, or go through 9oz. leather like a stalk of celery, right out of the box.

I wonder what the sharpening procedure is that you use to prepare for those demos. I would be very interested to see a video on that some time. I'm guessing it involves motors and belts, but it would still be interesting.

    Thanks!

    +1 I agree 100%

Actually,Tracy gets every knife that we test in the videos directly from our Finished Goods warehouse. We don't touch them up prior to filming nor do we re-sharpen them during the testing. Truth be told, I have NO skills as a sharpener, lol. What you're seeing is the factory edge. I happily accept the challenge of proving this; so in a future video I will try to show us getting a random knife from Finished Goods, walking it back to the Test and Innovation Lab, then performing the standard cut tests that you see in the videos all in one uncut shot. Any suggestions on what knife model you'd like to see us do the cut demo with?

You should probably test a 53... then do the lock test thing... then make an LE version of it of some kind.

Are there CATRA videos/results going to be shared at any point?

    How about a 943

I can easily believe it is the factory edge. Love the vids so keep em coming! I also would like to see the CATRA results and see how some of the steels and edge geometries stack up.

I also have a sharpening question:
Is the factory edge taken to a ceramic-rod-smooth edge, or is it left with some teeth on it, like most fine stones would leave? Just wondering how far you take the edges and what you think works best.

As a big customer i can speak to that at a layman's level. The edges come with grind lines that are easily visible with the 50 year old naked eye. It is a toothy edge, with some very fine polishing or stropping done on it. It takes a dozen or so sharpenings on medium and fine ceramic for those grind lines to go away. I would guess they are in the 300 grit range.

As demonstrated in the cutting test vids, it is a very effective edge. The tooth of the edge bites aggressivley, and that is really the type of edge I like. I just don't have a sharpening stone that course to maintain it. I like to sharpen on a medium ceramic or diamond stone, then strop on loaded cardboard. It is little smoother edge than factory, but still works good for me.

I almost agree with Po, but I think it's closer to 220 grit.

    I agree with you, Skimo.

    Hey Peter,

Assuming all the knives you've tested have similar edges, what would be your seat of the pants assessment of which model cuts best. I would be interested in your impressions both of the cutting efficiency of the blades and the comfort and usability of the handles.

    Thanks!

    Let's see a 525 cut test.

What would I say cuts best? That's a pretty tough one...well, I've tested nearly every model we've ever produced (I don't make videos of all of them as that would be a job unto itself, lol) Based strictly on CUTTING performance and ergomomics I'm liking the Volli a lot lately, mainly because of the blade grind and width of the cross section. Historically I've always liked how the 750 performed as well as my 940. My current EDC is the 710. I appreciate how the slight recurve helps to pull material into the edge. I find it fits more of what I usually cut (rope, leather, canvas). I was actually surprised how well the 2550 cuts. it's got a great blade edge profile that allows it to sail through materials. So, seat of my pants assessment I'd say the Volli, based mostly on cutting performance and ergonomics. It's not meant to be a hard use knife, but it certainly get's the cutting done easily enough.

I dunno man, M4 takes a sweet edge and holds it like the dickens. If I had a CATRA machine I'd put a 25 degree edge on at 120-220-320-400-600-1000-6000 and 25000 grit, of course CATRA testing isn't the final word in edge effectiveness. Still, finding a knife at the low end of the HRC tolerance and just see how superior M4 really is.
    Cool

    Peter,

I have had the same thought as Po for quite some time. I have read your reply and believe you are truthful. However, I look forward to the video you will present us.

I would like the demo to use a run of the mill catalog item in 154CM. Any Grip or 580 style knife would be best. In my opinion.
