Knife Values - Need Help Figuring Out My Father-In-Laws Collection
Hi
I am new to the knife world as my Father-in-law just passed away and he had a real nice collection of Benchmade knifes. I would like to determine the value of the knives for my mother-in-law. All the knives are in a benchmade box, never used, and look brand new. Any help putting a value on each knife would be appreciated. I have had very little luck finding values using google and Ebay. I suspect a lot has to do with my ignorance of this subject. I posted the list below, but lost a lot of formatting from my spreadsheet. If you have questions let me know. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

My wife has never heard the name fastjan. If my real name was posted, probably a bunch of you could figure out who I was.
It's weird to think about...
Very true, I one time sold alot of rare benchmade knives to a guy named Ron. Never knew what happened to him. I have run into people who have very nice collections and didn't even know about this forum also.0 -

#25 is a special knife. I've seen them go for $350.
Like TheCollector said, one went day before yesterday for $225. This shows the problem with trying to help people price knives, because as Loonbin pointed out, prices are fluid. Times, ecomonies, scarcity, geographical location, dozens of factors will change prices by quite a bit.0 -
One factor that seems to change prices is when a new release comes out from Benchmade that is similar to the old valuable one. (Example: M4 710 release affected the value of previous M2 710's) The knife I quoted above though, as many of you know, is referred to here on the forum as "The Holy Grail" (THG). They're hard to find in M2 steel. The D2 version is not the "Grail". Ever seen the THG offered for $400? I have. I have no way of knowing if it actually sold for that price, but I've seen them offered there.quote:Originally posted by different:quote:Originally posted by fastjan:

In the big picture of things, a THG really doesn't cost any more than a Sebenza. Also, of course, there are LE's that are much more expensive and rare, but most of those are just man-jewelry...the grail is a real usable knife.0 -
I want to thank you all for your posts and input. It has been overwhelming. I tried to respond to all PM's. If I missed any, I apologize. Sorry I did not respond to every post here either, but know I appreciate it.
I will try to get pictures up soon. I know I will be moving slower than many may like, but I am just one guy with a lot of other things to do too. I honestly did not anticipate the response I got. It has been great. There truly are some gentlemen on this forum. It is neat to see.
Thanks0 -
We're just a bunch of crazy knife lovers.

Very sorry to hear about your familys loss, my condolences.
As others have mentioned previously, don't be too quick to sell for the fast cash. There are definitely a few prizes in that collection that would be a cornerstone for many serious collections.
Indeed, there is more than one that I would be most happy to add, but do not have the cash to offer what they are really worth. The 730 CFHS in particular is one that I would absolutely LOVE to own and feel that is the prize of the collection, but would feel badly if I could not offer $300 or better for (that said, if you really want to sell it for $225, PM me and I will gladly take it off your hands, I'll live with the guilt of taking advantage of you...).
And anything in a gold box will also be worth a pretty penny indeed. The 706 I had never even heard of before, until I looked them up after seeing them in this thread. They could easily be worth more than the 730 I mentioned earlier.
My advice? Spend a week or two researching before selling anything. I would hate to see you and your family be taken advantage of simply because you are not up to speed on the value of the items you have. I know it is a difficult time right now due to the circumstances, but take a step back and be sure you are getting what these are worth before you sell them.
Again, my condolences, the best of luck going forward.0 -
You should post your offers publicly on the forum removing the forum members name.
If they are trying to lowball you...someone will tell you.
You can afford to ask for top dollar, a lot of those are really hard to get a hold of. It's not like people have another place to go buy one.0 -
Or you could wait with selling and got more from me as any other offer
(for a couple of them)
I like to overbid people on stuff I want have.
unfortunate didn't saw 730CFM2 going for $225

Welcome there and my condolences as well.
BTW your wife seems to have a GREAT taste 960 Damascus is a Grail
have it too but not Prototype.0 -
You guys are full of ideas, maybe they should all be sent to ebay so they can get top dollar. Or I may take them all for a large lump sum . Probably just best to let them decide what they want to do,they have options now,not our place to be telling them what to do.

LOL no , I have no problem winning what I want trust me when I make an offer
I think they came for info, he posted telling everyone thanks and now they probably just need their space to decide what they want to do. If they have any other questions I am sure they will ask or come to the site when they are ready if they decide.0 -

Hey Tow, Sorry for your loss that got you here. The best advice I see so far is, take it slow.
You've got some high end BM's there worth a lot of dough. You can search this forum "find" and other spots for info. Some of the more established members here will give you solid advice and prices. Guys like laser will end up giving you the collector value prices these deserve. Try and get up some photos to really get the juices flowing. Good luck.0 -
Lightning - I have noted the knife you are interested in and if we sell it I will notify you. Thanks for your honesty.
Nuero - thanks for the input. I am pondering the idea of ebay with a reserve price and letting those of you that are interested know when the auction occurs. Just an idea at this point. We still are not sure what to do. I want to make sure I do well for my Mother-in-law. I also want to see guys such as yourselves get to buy special knives at a reasonable price knowing that it would mean far more to you than someone who may not know what they are getting. Decisions, decisions.
Laser - My wife has good taste in men (me)and knives. She chose the Damascus because she remembers her dad getting it and being so excited about it. I remember that day too. I had never seen a Damascus blade until then. It was the one that spoke to her about her father and his love of knives. he had other Damascus blade knives, but they were not Benchmade and she chose the Benchmade because she knew that was his first love in collecting knives. PM any knives you wanted to be notified of in the event they go up for sale. Inclusing an email will make it easier to notify you since I can just send one email to all that are interested.
The Collector - Large lump Sum offers will be consideredThanks for your input. I will probably end uptaking more time than I thought on this project, but have been so impressed with this forum that I want to include you all as best as I can to give you all a chance to get something you would desire and know about.
Old Angler - The pictures are taking a lot more time than I figured. I had hoped to get them posted yesterday, but now it may be after Christmas.
Thank you all!0 -
Legal question
This collection has auto and butterfly (gravity?) knives. Some helpful members mentioned autos may be a concern legally to mail and have in state. The collection is not in the state I live in, so after researching laws, I may not be able to possess either auto or gravity knives in my state (crazy, huh?). If I left the auto's and gravity knives with her and had her ship them when they sold, we still have a concern about the laws concerning mailing these type of knives. I may go to a local knife shop just to see what they know (not to sell at all). If anyone is knowledgeable in this area, let me know.0 -
Buyer is responsible for knowing laws. If you sell here. No worries 0 -

Check into the laws more. In Tennessee it's illegal to have an auto to BaliSong. But there is a provision in the law to have one as a Curio or Keepsake. I'd look into it more.0 -

It's a bit more complicated than just that I am afraid, this is a question that I would refer to an Attorney that is qualified in such matters.
Especially when you are dealing with something that may or may not legally be your own property (such as an Estate).
The buyer may think he knows, but it's better to have the correct knowledge so nothing blows up in your face..
Especially with such a large collection and if you are dealing with buyers who may also be outside of the United States, get that wrong and you could be in a world of hurt…

Yep Serge,
You know it all, do you remember this one...

Who knows what the International Laws are and even for the seller also, in aiding abetting the importation of illegal weapons into another country.
As I said it’s better to get the right advice from a Qualified Attorney and know that you are completely in the clear…

Who Dares Wins - I prefer to err on the side of not going to jail or getting fined. I wouldn't do well with either. Thanks.

After looking into this, when it comes to selling autos, that is not the case, as federal law applies to the shipping of an auto knife across state lines (the one selling is the one shipping). The federal definition of a switchblade includes knives opened by inertia (balisongs). Selling to active duty military, LEO, EMT, Fire, or SAR may different if the buyer is buying it for official use in that capacity.
Federal Regulations:
18 USC 1716 (g) (1-4)
Provides this summary: Switchblade knives can be shipped to civilian and armed
forces supply or procurement officers and employees of the Federal government
ordering, procurement, or purchasing such knives in connection with activities in the
Federal government; to supply or procurement officers in the National Guard, the Air
National Guard or militia of the state or territory of the District of Columbia ordering,
procurement or purchasing such knives in connection with the activities of such
organization; supply or procurement officers or employees of the municipal
government of the District of Columbia or the government of any state or territory of
any county, city, or other political subdivision of a state or territory ordering,
procuring or purchasing such knives in connection with the activities of the
government.
*15 US 1244 (2-4)
Switchblade knives can be shipped by common carrier, that sale, transportation or
distribution, possession or introduction into interstate commerce of switchblade
knives is authorized if it is pursuant to a contract with the armed forces or any
member or employee thereof acting in the performance of his or her duty may
posses switchblade knives and may have them shipped and sold to him or her. The
possession and transportation upon his or her person of a switchblade knife or a
blade 3 inches or less is authorized to any disabled individual who has the use of
only one arm.[/quote]0 -
As I understand it, it would be the seller (or whoever puts it in the mail) that would get in trouble for mailing an auto. I'm not certain if the federal ban applies to balisongs or not, I've read differing opinions on that.
Basically, the only legal way to sell an auto is if you are in a state where they are allowed and you sell it to someone in state (and even then you can't mail it to them). that said, people do mail automatic knives every day, and I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble for it - but it is definitely illegal.
as a seller, I personally wouldn't worry about anything other than autos (and maybe balisongs) , but that's just my opinion, and I'm certainly not a lawyer.0 -
Man i wish we knew if this collector was a member of the forum..I'm betting he was and some of us knew him. 0 -
