The differences between 420 and 303 are huge, and not just in chemical content.

I could go into a huge discourse on the differences between Martensitic (420) and Austenitic (303), but I'll keep it very brief:

420 is your basic cutlery grade SS that is hardenable through normal heat treating operations and is your basic stainless that everyone is familiar with

303 is work hardenable, and will not harden through heating and quenching (that actually anneals it and makes it softer). 303 is also far more resistant to staining than 420, even some of the most corrosive chemicals will not touch 303.

My guess is that BM has found the 303 to be more resistant to staining through handling (sweaty hands, breast pockets, etc...), plus it would be easier to machine as well keeping manufacturing costs down.

    You know Joe,

As a pen collector I have been looking at them, I wonder if they would be considered a weapon these days you have to be so careful..

No one looks at the pen twice, even loaned it to a friend to write up an invoice and she didn't have any comments other than it was heavy. (Which it Is.)

I hand my 1100 series pens to folks all the time while delivering pizza and the are signing a CC receipt.
Many compliment how it writes. or a simple , "N i c e Pen" Latley I have been carring my 4th your anniversary sobriety pen i picked up at KW's on my drive movingto Texas earlier in October.
I went for the Gold Pen. Pretty eye catching.
every know and then when i hand it to folks with the cap still on the ink end I get comments about how you could hurt someone with that thing. most of the time I hand them a regular ole clip board and the pen with the cap on the tactical end. They are mostly happy with the weight and the S M O O T H writing.

For most O f last year I carried the Ti Pen. that got the wow it's heavy comments. the SS version is an ounce heavier. I did a post that included the weight of SS Ti Damascus and the aluminum pens in grams and ounces.
    I'll try and google it.

I gotta ask, let me know if I'm being intrusive. Does giving them a fancy pen to use ever hurt tips? When I was a craps dealer I always yelled at a friend of mine for wearing a Rolex while we were dealing together. I was going for the starving broke dealer look for pity tips lol. I always told people he bought it at a swap meet for 50 bucks lol.
