Difference is Autoglass is tempered and made to break into little pieces. If the building windows are tempered it would work just fine otherwise it would just crack it.

Although most newer buildings have tempered glass as well.

I have seen people use glass breakers on all sorts of glass, depending on the type you can get different results.

I have used the 810 on auto glass (breaking the driver's side window following an accident we witnessed). It did the job and frankly I was surprised at how little effort it took, just have to know where to hit (near a corner).

For regular glass you can always just give it a try on some scrap glass you have. Keep in mind the type of glass breaker the 810 has, is one that will loosen up if you use it alot.

On a side note about breaking glass, you can break a car window with a piece of spark plug ceramics about the size of a pea. You don't even have to throw it that hard and the window shatters.

Tempered glass is easy to break with any hard object with any points on it

Thus, always carry a few pieces of broken spark plug in your glove box, and you won't need a glass breaker.
