Duplicate Numbered Gold Class?
I listed my gold class grip, #664 for sale on another forum. Another member with good feedback posted that he also has #664, but with a different date on the certificate. Since these weren't limited the year they were out, I'm assuming that there was just a numbering mistake. Is there any way to confirm this, or has anyone else seen this on others?
For reference, there are pictures of mine here:

Did he provide you with any proof he actually has one of the same number? 0 -

He posted some pictures. I'm not the original owner of mine - I got it in a trade. It is possible that he had it previously & had pictures leftover, but I don't think so. He's got 100% feedback with 38 transactions, so I'm inclined to believe him.
EDIT TO ADD: one of the pictures showed the certificate of authenticity & it had a different date than mine. Again, it is possible that it could have been photoshopped I suppose, but it looked legitimate to me.0 -
That's pretty weird. If I were him, I'd buy yours so I had the matched set. 0 -
Something - I believe that thought crossed his mind.
He was kind enough to share some pictures with me. I've uploaded them to my photobucket account, and I'll let everyone judge for themselves. Here are my pictures, taken this afternoon:
These came from him:
They both look legitimate to me. I'm hoping that Jason or someone else from Benchmade will chime in.0 -
Can't tell for sure with the certificate, but the boxes are most definately different - but with the same number. Same with the knives, I can see subtle differences between the two leading me to conclude they are different knives with the same number.
Unless one is a very good counterfit, I would tend to believe it's two different (but legit) knives with the same number.
Not that I am any expert on Gold Grips, having never seen one in person, but looking at the pics that's what i see...0 -
Yeah, everything looks completely legit on both of them. it has to just be a mistake on one of them.
It's interesting that they're dated over a month apart, I would think the correct number would have been quite a bit different. I have number 463, which is dated June 2010.0 -
I'm guessing that the one is 667 and was misread as 664 for lasermarking, which makes this a unique situation. Other than that, it's an obvious error. 0 -
Thanks Jason. 0 -

That makes sense, the "4" does look a little odd on that one.
On a side note, would someone please buy this knife before I do

Oh man, I have # 664 too.
Just kidding, couldn't resist.0 -
I have 499, but it depends how you hold in the mirror.
If it is not a fake this would be really valuable (I think) more than just a pair. I think it would like a defective coin from the mint.0 -
Hard to imagine how a 7 gets turned into a 4, but I suppose anything's possible. Very curious though! 0 -

Well that makes sense, just a matter of good old fashion human error... No body is perfect and mistakes do happen, I don't think that it adds any value to the knife, it's not like an upside down plan on a stamp..
Perhaps Benchmade if at all possible take back yours or his back and redo the number to the very last one, if they have the blade and re-issue a new certificate..

I agree, I don't think it would be as valuable as a mist stamp. but two duplicates is worth something. Problem is most people would think 1 is a fake. (or both). 0 -

I would have to agree with that, but I was just looking back and this happened way back in mid June. I would be very interested in how it all worked out, they are a great knife and personally if I wanted a 551 Gold Class to use I would buy it if the price was right..
As I said it would be interesting to see how it all turned out..

On the other hand, if you wanted it as a user and truly loved that number you would have "REAL" backup.

For those of you curious about what happened, I ended up selling my #664 to the owner of the other #664 at a reduced price. I figured it would be neat for him to have both. I don't know if he's kept it or not. 0 -
OK every one this thing has really been bugging me and I just had to get to the bottom of it, the answer is that both where real..!!!
Each year Benchmade produces an Unlimited Limited Gold Class Knife, this year it's the 940-121 and they will make them just for the year BUT there is NO sealing of how many. They do a batches as they go and are now trying to keep a closer eye on the number system, I am not sure how..
The same was with the 551BK-101 it was the Unlimited Limited (don't ask me why they call it that, it beats me) some years ago now, BUT they did did them in batches of 250 and there where at least two batches do there are two 001/250 and so one...
So that is why you had two with the same numbers, they where both genuine however they just ended up on the same forum for sales at the same time..
That is how this happened..

This is funny. I just saw this thread.
Well I guess the guy decided not to keep both #664 because I now have one of the #664.0 -

That's the world of Unlimited Limited's... ROLMAO0 -
I have an what was an Unlimited Limited Gold Class (not the 551), BUT it's number 4 so it should be OK so long as the guy doing the counting can count to at least 5...ROLMAO 0
