Keyman,
I keep seeing these. Are they carbon? Is there a clear coat on top? What colors do you do? I have seen mostly orange variations.0 -

It's brown canvas micarta and there's no clear coat.
The first pic is aged micarta. All the surface canvas has darkend with use from the oils from my hands and an occational light coating. The oil visually brings out the micartas grain more and deepens the colors.
The second pic is brand new grips, no oils, no dirty hands.
Mine used to look lighter like those when I first made them.
Every set of scales I make in brown canvas micarta is a little different than the next. This makes brown canvas one of my favorite materials. As I have stated before, It's like a favorite pair of jeans. The more you use them, the more character they get.
Black canvas micarta doesn't have enough contasting colors to really acheive the same look.
But, I'm sure that green, maroon, red and most other colors of canvas micarta would come out very similar, by one degree or another.0 -
Keyman...scales look great..PM on your way 0 -
Love the canvas grain, love the rounded edges, love the beat to heck M2HS Ritter blade! 0 -
They'll be headed to you tomorrow.
I hope you like them dwcliff.

I agree, those look really good!0 -
Very nice. Do you machine these at all (aside from drilling holes?) Wondering where the different shades of brown come from?
How is the grip on these?0 -
Keyman they do look good and you should be very proud of your work..

I carry mine everyday and think they are the perfect amount of grippynes.
Grippynes. Is that a word?0 -

Yea that's it. I knew grippynes didn't look right.0 -
Very nice work Keyman.
Can you do a set of brown ones like above for a 710 and make the end of the grip a little longer and more pointed (like on an AFCK grip)? I like the 710, but the grip feels "short" in my hand.0 -
Thanks guys.
I do really appreciate the feed back.
I really like the color/contrast and the basket weave pattern on these. They came out pretty sweet.quote:Originally posted by JRaysp:

Sorry JR.
I definitely know that feeling! It's called scale addiction! I, of all people, shouldn't talk! I'm constantly looking for my next, better/sweeter scales.quote:Originally posted by Geocyclist:

Because these scales are contoured the different layers of canvas are exposed. The layers are made up of different shades of canvas. The other brown canvas scales I have done previously are made from a lighter colored brown canvas. Never the less you can still see the layering effect.quote:Originally posted by OBJ Viking:

I'm sure it can be done. But, I'm not to sure how good that would look? I would think that the scales would follow the true lines of the liners until you got to the rear end. At that point the liners would then need to be nested. That way you could change the shape/length of the scales without it making the knife look too weird. It's definitely possible.
New stuff always looks better.......and I always have more to come.0 -
Could you not make the grips thicker in the rear to touch one another behind the liner contour to close the gap and add stability?...just an idea.
...sort of like an added point on the end to break glass or strike an opponent.0 -
Yup, I think you've got it. Sounds like that would work out fine. 0 -

Got a website or picture collection showing more of your work? I have an AFCK that could use that treatment. 0 -
You are quite welcome D.
That's a nice lookin' carry you got there.
I think the stonewashed blade and the dark brown canvas look great together!
It is pretty hard to mess up a Benchmade.
They're really good stuff.0
