sadly looks like a hot mess. So far off this artisan’s previous offerings. Positive is it is ambidextrous.

I like it! Here’s the sub-3” blade folks have been asking for.

Not really my style. I much prefer the 484 over this one.

Now if they offered the 484 in a 3 1/2 " blade, I'd be all over it like white on rice.

    I can always hope, right?

    Yes, sadly.
I love BM, but this looks like one of non-existent models (i.e. counterfeit abortions) that I’ve seen. Indeed, a strong contender for Blade 2018- Overall Ugliest Knife Of The Year. It has the appearance of a $15 Chinese knife if ever I saw one. Maybe the target demographic is the mall-ninja type who will appreciate the cheesy wood surrounds and the overdone ventilation slots.

I don’t believe I’ve ever really downed a BM knife, but holy crap BM, how did that atrocity ever get a green light?!

I like it, I think. It's different, and the more I look at it, the more it grows on me. I've been a Nakamura fan for a while, and have all the Benchmade Nakamura's, so will at least need to add this one to my collection. I carry a 586 and 484-1 in rotation these days.

Love the bamboo-styled backspacer - First thing I noticed, before reading the description.

Great! I’ll have to check one out.

Got mine. Looks much better in person. Even my friend, who said he wasn't impressed by the photos said wow, it looks much better in person.

The bamboo-styled backspacer has the pattern on the INSIDE as well!

I love Nakamura designs, and having a Japanese wife and traveled to Japan several times, I like how Nakamura was inspired by the brick wall in this design. Pretty cool.

Good to hear you like it better in person - I've got mixed feelings based on the photos. I'm a big Nakamura fan as well, so I can't imagine not getting one of these at some point.

I have to agree about Spyderco - it's function over form. Ugly as all hell, but do feel good in the hand. As a daily user, in complete darkness, I could handle Sypderco. I do have a few oddball Sypderco's in my collection, but damn, fugly!

I love Japanese culture & tradition, and as alluded to in my previous post, I can relate to the design inspiration of the 486. It's extra cool to me, but most will not have that connection. I've spent many weeks wandering the streets in Japan, from Chiba to Tokyo, Osaka to Kyoto, Nikka, Kobe, and rural areas. The 486 speaks to me.

Yes, it does feel good in the hand, and I like the blade shape as well. I'd consider it for an EDC, but like my 586, 484-1, and 780 too much to add another daily user in the rotation. This one will join the other Nakamura's in my collection. Who knows, maybe I'll bring it on my next trip to Japan. I try to bring a different knife every time I go.

PS - Got my parts for my bstrdized/customized 586, my 484-1, and my 780 from forum members! Thanks guys!

I think sometimes photos don't show the real beauty of a knife. A good case in my experience was the Grizzly Creek. I don't think I ever saw a decent picture of this knife anywhere but when I got to see one and handle one in the flesh I was taken aback with it, thought it was stunning. Looks like this one could be the same.

Yeah, I do like to at least get a newly designed knife in hand, when possible, before I make a final decision on whether or not I’ll buy it. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Benchmade more than once after having made quick judgements, simply by seeing their NPA photo.

I’ll admit that while I don’t have an initial attraction to the 486, I was pleased to notice the blade’s attributes. FFG 20CV?! That’ll perform nicely...
NPA says “high ground”, but I’m seeing a full flat grind.

Also, at the very least, it is quite interesting to me to compare a designer/knifemaker’s original custom model, from which BKC pulled from to design their production model.

    Question for Jason:
Is the 486 sporting actual Cocobolo?
Or is this in fact the stabilized wood we’re now accustomed to seeing from BKC?

(As I first understood it, Nakamura’s original submission makes use of Cocobolo, but I’m confused as to whether or not BKC is following suit in that regard)

It's stabilized wood. Using true Cocobolo would be prohibitive in an inline production knife, even assuming we could find enough to do the volume we need.

    Thanks Jason.
That was my thinking too, but I just wanted to clarify that the NPA does indeed claim the wood is Cocobolo, as does the 486’s product description at Benchmade.com

Also, many dealers are claiming Cocobolo.
Doesn’t matter much to me either way, but for those who are interested in purchasing, I’m sure they’d appreciate knowing exactly what they’re getting.

Yeah, I can see how that might be a little confusing. To clarify, it IS what our stabilized wood vendor manufactures as Cocobolo. It's just a stabilized version (not wood from a Cocobolo tree).

Benchmade really should have incorporated the sakura flower somehow - it's a strong Japanese symbol, worthy of a Nakamura design.

Hi, new here and thought this would be the place to come for information. I really like the looks of the 486 but there is no place around here to handle one.
Has anyone measured the thickness behind the edge on the 486. I'm hoping it will be on the thin side.
    Thanks
