They work , when your in a pinch .....get it fairly sharp too.
Cons ......takes off to much metal , well not alot but if used for sharpening all the time , you,d wear your blade out faster.

I have a few, and I always take one in the field. They are great for in a pinch, like if a blade chips. But I certainly wouldn't use one often. Like others already said, it takes a lot of steel off. That's great to remove a chip but crummy for a touch up. It does create a very toothy edge too.

pull through sharpeners, very last resort for me.

Might as well carry a diamond hone in your wallet or bag. For a situation where you just really need some kind of edge... I guess then it would be pretty awesome.

yeah, that's the impression I got from the rest of the posts too, the only reason I am looking at them is because of their compact size and portability... is there anything else you would recommend?

For field touchups I have a Smith's diamond rod, it looks like a pen with clip and all, with a rat tail and the other end half round and flat. It's pretty effective until I can get back to my Edge Pro and it doesn't damage the bevel.

I actually have one of Benchmades Field Sharpeners, it is what it is something to have in a backpack for when you are in a pinch.

I wouldn't recommend it for everyday use to sharpen a knife, as I said it is what it is and I don’t think that it was intended as any more than that...

i have an 8" gerber sportsman steel that i've taken with me for over forty years on my hunting and fishing vacations.it's similar to this one but longer and the sheath is attached to the steel with a brass bolt and swings around for storage.

My buddy bought an Ontario 22" machete. It came as dull as a bar of soap.
Using my Benchmade field sharpener I got a good serviceable edge on that steel in no time.
But after what I saw coming off it I would not use it on any my 710's!
