I'd bet it's cheaper to change the resin in the tank than to paint the scales, especially if you're trying to paint a lighter color like orange over a black base.

The reason the question comes up is that apparently not every popular color is available in Valox, Grivory, Noryl GTX, etc. The "Sand" colored Griptilian and Adamas handles are painted or coated, however you want to think of it. That's the only painted color I'm aware of.

    Any others?

You're right, of course. I'd forgotten about the sand color. I think that was only temporary, though?

Pretty sure my old green mini scales were black underneath. I might still have them in a drawer - will have to check tonight.

I thought the OD was a solid and not painted on. I'll need to check as well.

Painted, but that's solid G10, not molded FRN-type material - a different kettle of fish. For the record, I thought that was pretty disappointing, but that's an old topic for another thread (or maybe for no thread at all).

I saw mention of the Adamas scales, painted sand color on G-10, so...thought it relative...prehaps not.

Old topic, new topic, fish or fowl or foul, all the same...disappointing indeed..

One thing about the surface of that OD green 710-801 is that green is tough stuff. I have used mine harder than any other handle I own and that handle has never cut, peeled, scraped or worn off anywhere. In fact, I like those green scales so well that I just moved them over onto one of those 710-3's with the harder M4.
    Cool

    FJ,

Are you thinking of getting 710-1401 and swap the G10 Handle?

You are correct, I had mis-remembered. The OD is solid throughout.

I have a 710-1401 here at my desk. No plans to swap scales. I must say though that those blue handles are very well done. I like the 710-1401.
    Cool

Thanks guys. Yes I remember being disappointed with that 710 as well. So much so that I sold mine. Funny how things work out though...I ended up buying one again when a used one popped up here for $100. Even with painted handles that's a deal nobody should pass up!

They actually aren't, anymore. They were for awhile though. The Grip handles were kind of a sand swirl that had to be painted, but is now a more uniform sand. The Adamas handles were initially painted to meet Mil specs for that color. We recently found a G10 colorant that meets that spec, so no more paint there, either!

    There ya go! Thanks, Jason!

So, at this point in time, there are no painted or coated handles in the line?

BTW, I am really appreciating what seems to be your more regular participation these days. It's a great bonus for us Benchmade fanatics, and beneficial all round to have the straight dope on some of these topics.

    Cheers!

No G10 or PIM, at least. We actually DO cerakote a couple of aluminum handles for some exclusives, just due to anodized colors not making the cut.

None of the inline stuff is coated, however.

Thanks guys! It's been pretty awesome getting more dialed in with the forum. It's cool to hear how different people perceive different products. I'm glad it's value added for you folks as well.
