heehee, it's honestly the last one I needed. There are a couple more super-rarities that I'll never ever see because only one was made.

The 698 was my first Benchmade, and I wondered if I really wanted to get into this price range. Now I just wish I'd done it sooner.

    Hi 1DaveN,

I must admit that Foray is rather dress carry IMO. For EDC, I would suggest to look at something like Rift (950-1 or 950-1401 Orange/Black with S30V)

If you like more bang for buck, I like 3.5" blade Griptilian is not too high of price point. I carry 550SG (S30V in Saber Grind) for EDC.

Thanks, and thanks too for the review and all the information. I'll definitely look into the other models you mentioned, after I recover from this month's purchases (698 and 556-1).

Saw an interesting interview with Gale Bradley in regards to the liners being proud of the scales.
He said the reason it was done was to have a contoured feel without contouring the scales.
Makes sense I guess in a monetary sense.....machining the scales would add $!

After starting this post I found one that wasn't a first production so I pulled the trigger. IMHO this is a home run. I love that they took the classic 690 and updated it with the AXIS lock but kept the classic design cues the same. This baby has an ultra smooth action and mine was dead center right out of the box. I love the slight recurve in the blade as well as the upgraded blade steel. For me this one ticks all the boxes, thanks Benchmade.

Where did you find a regular production one? I've been waiting until all the regular suppliers dry up the FPR's before committing to buy.

Well, looks like mine will be here tomorrow. I'm excited. Don't know if it's a First Production or a regular production, but was able to snag it for $35 lower than the cost at all the popular online sites. Fingers crossed it isn't a fake.

I also have a 698 due in today. Got mine in a trade for a knife I had initially listed to sell. This may be the only
Knife out of the new line up that I was interested enough in to bite at the trade when offered. Well, maybe the 765, but I haven't seen those out anywhere yet. Excited for this one, though.

I see CF bolster's and ironwood scales in my Forays future.
This is a awesome knife and a great heavy duty alternative to the standard mini grip/sequel sized knives.

So. My 698 came in today. I am instantly in love with this knife. The way I was with my first Ares, and with the (forgive me) ZT0450CF. I'm at a point where I'm dumbing down my collection. I've gotten rid of Benchmades, ZT's, Sebenzas (and maybe another later), and a bunch of other stuff. This Foray is a keeper. It's a little tank.

Got mine today too (quick shipping!) off of a dealer on eBay with a 'make an offer' price. I made what I thought was a fair offer and I was surprised that it was accepted! Sadly it is a First Production but that's okay, I can live with it. So far I really love it...probably the best of the new BKC's currently. That it pays homage to one of the great designs (the 690) albeit with AXIS lock makes me want to finish my collection of 690 variants. Like Redwood said above, a tank of a knife. I hope in the future the Foray takes off as one of the models that Benchmade makes many variants to collect. I would really love to see a CF/Winewood like the original 690 and with blue titanium frame like the original. Then CF, different G10, Gold Class, etc. Finally, a tip-up 690 with the AXIS lock! my wishes are fulfilled.

When I get a chance I'll post pics of the few 690's I have, as well as my Elishewitz Oracle and Djinn; the designs that the 690 was based on orginally.

I was able to try one out at my local distributor - very nice. It along with the CLA are the 2 I like the best out of the new models.

I feel Foray to be almost like inch shorter version of 710.

    What do you think?

    MFL, yes
I always though the 710 & 943 blades would make good companion blades.
If the 940, 950& 810 are the "three sisters"
Maybe the 710, 943 & this 698 will be the "three adopted sisters"

Yeah, I might need to do as KM did. I feel the grip to G10 is a bit slipply sometimes.

    Love the thick blade though.
