How to adjust pivot screw on Barrage
How do you adjust the pivot screw on the barrage.
1. How do you get to it (I want to make sure i don't take something off I shouldn't)
2. How much tension does it need? I have a little side to side play with the blade, that is why I am asking. But it raises a good point, since it is spring assisted, how tight/loose should it be?

Hi Geo, it's easy, but you have to take the "front" (left) side scale off. Four screws, lift the scale off, and there's the pivot screw. Tweak as desired, locktite, and replace the scale.
I think you have to expect a tiny bit of play in the pivot for the Axis Assist to work optimally. Not a lot, but just enough you can feel it. If you take all the play out, you will have opening problems when the pivot is dirty or needs lube.
It's a trade off, like any other Axis pivot adjustment of course. You can adjust your Axis Assist pivot for zero play with the expectation that when it gets dry and/or dirty, it might not open briskly. Or you can allow a little play, and it will snap open even when dirty. It's up to you. Personally, I don't notice the play at all when using the knife unless I go looking for it, so I leave it a little loose so it will work well even when somewhat neglected.
This is a great topic, so ask if you still have questions. I've had these things apart and inside out.
You know what though, I still don't know how these things (Axis Assist) work...
It is a radial spring, but you get past a certain threshold, and the spring pulls the blade closed instead of opening...
How does that happen?!

One other thing - make sure not to overtighten the stop screw when you put the scale back on. You'll think you have the pivot adjusted perfectly, but then it's binding. 0 -

AxisFan, - what do you mean by "stop screw" Is there more than just the regular pivot screw and the small screws that hold the scale on?
By the way - picked up a 2nd 2014 Mini Barrage shot show special. For $204 I can't pass this up considering how much a regular 586 costs. Some day I will have to get a 585 custom.0 -

Haha! Believe it or not, I actually can expound on that for ya!
The torsional spring in the AXIS assist knives actually changes size as it winds and unwinds (no mystery to most of you, I'm sure). When wound, it's taller and narrower than when unwound. So the leg actually moves laterally inside the blade as it opens or closes. At about 15 to 20 degrees from fully closed, the leg moves into a position that effectively neutralizes the spring's torque with relation to the pivot.
At that point, the suck back is actually generated by the omega springs pushing the stud against the hook on the blade!

The 2 scale screws on either side, near the axis bar that thread into the cylinder that the blade stops against when the knife is open. If you overtighten these, it will bind up the blade.0 -

Brilliant! I saw the little cutouts and figured that had something to do with it, but still don't exactly get it...it's a little counter-idiotive.
I'll study on it some more should the opportunity arise. It really is amazing how simple and functional the Axis Assist is.

It's a pretty neat mechanism, actually! It's pretty simple, yet effective.
If you want to get REALLY into it, you can access the patent on it. It's a bit dense (as all patents are) but informative.
