I personally like what they've done with the 940-2. There's certainly nothing wrong with G10 scales and S30V. The knife in that configuration is a great knife. However, if you're looking to shell out some $ on a new 940, I've still got to recommend the 940-1. Especially if a lightweight knife is a deciding factor, which it may be, in your case. Carbon fiber, S90V both make for outstanding materials in an EDC. It's worth a bit extra, IMO. That's the route I'd go, personally. Something to think about...

/|\ agree with Mac, but if you don't want to spend for top of the line 940-1, take a look at 940-1501 LE at KW.
The 940-1501 has G10 handles but traditional shape like 940-1 ( not funky like 940-2) & the 940-1501 has an up grade in steel too all for $20 more than the 940-2.
There are several of us on the Forum who are big 94X fans & the 940-2 was disappointing. The new handle design isn't as graceful as any other 94X.
Comparison shop look at 940-1 vs 940-2 for handle style. Pick what you like.

Marty and Bill - Thanks so much for the advice. I am looking into the 940-1 and to be honest, I hadn't even heard of the 940-1501 (great looking knife!). I think I will hold off on the 940-2 for now and look into these options. Thanks again!

    No problemo.
So, now you've got some homework to do...

Wise words spoken. We all have our preferences, but yours is most important, in this case. You're the one spending $, you're the one carrying and using the knife, so buy what'll make you happiest, and is best suited to your needs.

Or, you know... Just buy them all...

The depth of knowledge and passion here is really quite astounding.
Although I have used pocket knives in my job and around the home for a long time, I am very new to this as a hobby. Last year I was getting more into this and came across Benchmade and was blown away with their designs, quality and craftsmanship. Luckily I am at a stage in my life where I have a little more disposable income and can pursue this more than I could before.

I am happy to follow everyone here and learn as much as I can. Marty - I may have more questions in the future regarding purchasing/shipping to and from Canada.

    Thanks again!

    Yep, I'm your man.
If I ever get too long winded, just chime in and tell me. The other guys here know... I tend to get a little excited when it comes to Benchmade cutlery. See you around the Forum, and I'm only a PM away if you need anything. Cheers.

When I bought my first Benchmade not that long ago, I was really just looking for an awesome knife/tool. I had no idea that this would turn into a hobby. Once you are bitten by the bug, it really does take hold...

I've got a 940-2 sitting in my mailbox right now

I had a first production run when they first came out, but sold it because I didn't like the "first production" markings. Now, almost a year later, I'm getting one again..

You liked it enough to get it again, that's a good sign..I've not yet owned or even held a 940 of any kind, though it's always been on The List.

Looking at pictures, I would venture that the updated version has good ergos..any input on this? Opinions of it compared to the classic?

I admit that I'm fishing a bit for reassurance on the 940-2. I've liked G10 more than aluminum handles so far, and I like the green spacers.

Its hard for me to give the -2 a fair comparison to the classic. I owned a classic version for just a few months, but ultimately sold it because I didn't like the aluminum handles. I can say that I really like the -2 and have been carrying it everyday since receiving it. I've only used the -2 to break down a few boxes and to cut twine off of bundles of firewood--basic tasks, but no complaints. The green barrel spacers are sweet too

I am a huge fan of the original 940. I agree with Bill's post above - I also don't find the handle of 940-2 as graceful or detailed. Although I understand why the screws need to protrude on the inside of the handle from an engineering point of view, I don't like it. I hope I am not being overly critical, but I still haven't warmed up to the 940-2 yet.

I have the 940-2 and the 943. My personal opinion.... for the size of the knife, I preferred the blade on the 943, because it had a tiny bit more belly, and a pointy tip. The 940-2 has less rigidity in the handles than the aluminum version. I ended up swapping blades and using the 943 blade on the 940-2 handle (before switching to DOAT custom scales (which I love with the 943 blade). I was going to switch the 940-2 blade with the 943's black aluminum handle when I decided I wanted a thicker handled knife.

In the end, I found that although the 940's blade is very capable, for tasks where I needed a hard grip, the handle was just too skinny to get a proper hammer grip on. Since I only use the saber grip for light to medium duty tasks, I switched to another knife with a larger grip (for a more comfortable hammer grip) for my EDC. IMO, if you use the saber grip for most/all of your needs, the 940 and the 940-2 is a very capable knife in a small package.

Things I do which made me want a knife with a more comfortable hammer grip included cutting through thick cardboard (like the kind that holds together 300 lbs of watermelons), cutting wall-to-wall carpeting, and cutting young shoots off of evergreen shrubs.

I know you prefer clip point over Osborne tanto, so have you tried 551-1?

As everyone knows that 55x-1 series have eliminated plastic feel of the FRN grip to G10. I love Griptilian for the availability, affordability and interchangeability. My choice is though 550-1.
