BM 581 Barrage
Hi all, I got my BM 581, finally. Been waiting for sometime due to backorder. It is nice knife but, I feel tat it could go on diet. Perhaps I'm so used to lighter knives. This is first spring asst knife ever, so not used "kick" when deploying the blade, it also deploys very readily. I'll see if I feel the same down the road.

a diet? to make it lighter? not much you can do there except maybe put some 580 scales on instead. I am not sure even how much that would lighten it. 0 -

Well, BMK lists the 580 as 4.2oz and the 581 as 5.2oz, so a full oz difference.
Downside is that the nice solid feeling the 581 handle has would give way to hollow feeling plastic of the regular Barrage. Never mind the drastic improvements in the blade, the difference in the handles is more than enough reason to never carry my 580...0 -
I would never carry a 580 either... I am saying if the weight is an issue that is the only thing I can see changing.. and I didn't mean the whole knife for a 580, but the scales off a 580 onto the 581. I carreid one for a long time just like that. not sure why someone put 580 scales on a 581 but that's the way I got it. 0 -
Really this is a Catch 22, personally I wouldn't carry a 580 either as they were designed as a Price Pointed Utility Knife with Auto Assist and that is not what I need..
The 581 is a Up Market Version of the same thing and I actually sold mine as I didn't really like it either as an EDC and I didn't consider it a collectable (besides I have a Limited Edition 580-1102 in my collection, so it seemed pointless..LOL).
Now if BM comes out with a 586, then I am interested (Hint, Hint)...
It just seems to me that he has what he has and it is what it is and if he's unhappy with it perhaps it might just be that he needs to look at another knife..

I like light knives. I wound up with a 581BK blade in a 580 Valox handle during a bunch of Barrage blade and handle swaps, and it has become one of my favorite knives. M390 blade, full steel liners, Axis Assist...it's perfect.
That being said, I've got a 581, but don't consider it heavy. I have a knife with full G-10 limited edition scales on it also, and it is not easy to tell from my Valox knife in the dark.
