Jason addressed these about a year ago. I believe he said the redesigned liners make it easier to machine. I don’t recall reasons for others changes. I sure Jason will be happy to explain each.

The patent numbers have been replaced with the URL for their web page, so it's easier to update patent numbers.

Thought this might be an appropriate thread to add my question, i picked up a used 940 that has 154cm steel so it must be an earlier production, but the difference i see is in the butterfly logo, this one has antenna and the new models don’t. Does anyone know when he logo change happeened?

    I AM happy to explain!

The patent number is no longer on the blade, because there are no applicable patents. In addition, the liners were re-tooled to make some manufacturing upgrades. They don't really affect the end user.

Jason, do you know when the butterfly logo changed and lost the antenna?

    Sounds like right around 2004.

Many Thanks for the explanation Jason

Although there are more sophisticated models, the original green 940 still is my all around favorite edc. I think I like it even more than my 940-1501.

    Not a problem. Any time.

I'm a 940-1 guy, but I have pretty much every variant we've done in the last 8-9 years and then some.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we should all aspire to acquire a Design Engineer position at BKC.

What’s that thing they say about pics?
Something about showing them, or it didn’t happen?

The 940-1 handle is my favorite of all the variations. It's not as thin as the others but is still a feather weight and has perfect ergos.

    /|\ Mac, you questioning Boinkman?

When you need a light weight knife, nothing beats it with blade to handle ratio & axis lock.
I know you like the Anthem & 531-132. I thought Anthem was going to be a little stronger for a little extra weight but my Anthem is slippery so it is a safe queen. I like standard 531 a lot but ergos aren’t as comfortable to me as the 940’s.

Mac, had you heard the 940’s are BKC most popular model.

I’m questioning why boinkman claims the 940-1 handle has perfect egos, yes...

Thanks Bill, but no one's opinion should be above questioning

The 94x is a strange knife but after using them and carrying them, their value becomes apparent.
The 940-1's comfort in hand comes from the thicker non rounded scales and the unconventional finger rests. I realize everyone is different in what fits their hand and what they think a knife should be.

Now I feel obligated to post pictures. Let me know if I'm doing it wrong.

/|\ Mac, I like the comfort of the 940 in hand, after all these years carrying a 940 I won’t rule out my hand has conformed to the knife’s handle shape. For me the 810 when open is the most comfortable Benchmade when blade is open & in use, but it not light weight for suit & tie wear or gym clothes.

    Thanks boinkman.
I was assuming that you dig the 940-1 for the way the scales are milled, combined with being so light weight... I was just a little suprised that you prefer them to those of the new contoured -1802. (I still haven’t handled one, but as I’ve told you, that model makes me want to try one...again)

/|\ I prefer original 940 style to 940-1802, as I can feel where my hand / fingers are on the handle better than the -1802.

Boinkman, your grip looks same as I hold it except I’m a little further back on handle. Back end of your handle shows more handle & your thumb little further up on top of the blade.

I agree that the -1802 offers less tangibility but it is helped by the deep carry pocket clip. The 940-1 is more plain in appearance compared to the -1802. It's actually hard to believe that many of the variations could feel so different given how similar they appear.

/|\ First thing I did with the 940-1802 was change to split arrow clip. I then took off the red thumb studs for sliver. If there was a market for the 940-1802’s handle I’d sell mine.
