    Flippers be a flipping

Disappointing, but not surprising, it would happen so fast.

That guy doesn't seem to want to sell. I have made him a reasonable offer and he turned it down. Other forum members are also interested but he said he paid to much for it so my guess is the starting bid wouldn't be enough because he has already ended the auction early before.

I'd be very reluctant to bid on that 810-1601, with a Russian seller who joined e-bay earlier this month, and this is his first sale. And he's saying it could take over a month to arrive, so by the time the knife arrives or doesn't arrive, the seller may be long gone. That would leave you to deal with Paypal on a payment you made over a month before.

Mine hasn't even arrived from BM yet and people are already flipping?!

"Forum" knife for Forum "members". Yeah, right.

Noted. Unfortunately the design team doesn't have control over that policy but the concern has been expressed internally.

I wouldn't let me 810-1601 go for less then $2K.
    I don't know what I'd take for my 810-1602. It's pretty fantastic!

716Engineering here on the BM forum.
    Name is Jeremy Meyer.

I've given this some thought, and this is just my personal opinion, please feel free to chime in, blast me, flame me or whatever. It's all good.

When I first saw his auction, I was kinda "put out" with this guy. I mean really, people hadn't even gotten all their orders yet, and here is this dude selling for a SUBSTANTIAL profit. How rude! This is supposed to be a thank you from Benchmade to the forum members for being loyal customers and enthusiasts for the product. Does that mean when we buy a BM that we are never suppose to sell it, never make a profit doing so? How many of us still have every BM we ever purchased? I know I don't, and I know I have made a good bit profit over the years on certain models, the discontinued and limited models especially. Nobody thinks twice when an AFCK Gold Class that sold for around $450 new ends up going for $800 now. I don't know the exact numbers but you get the idea. Supply and demand. This guy is doing the same thing, yep he is trying to profit on selling a knife very much in demand, it just happens that it's a very recent release and not years old yet. Yep he got through on the phone when others did not, just luck of the draw more than likely. I'm sure he purchased the knife or knives with the first intent being to flip it/them. BM set the policy as to how many could be purchased, some bought 1, some bought 10. I don't know how many 716Engineering bought.

When BM released the 15080-1601 to qualifying dealers, that was a "thank you" to the dealers for putting in a significant order over a certain dollar amount. Were the dealers supposed to keep that knife in a private collection or something, never to let it venture beyond another qualifying dealer? No, they could do with it whatever they liked, put it their pocket or sell it and make no profit or sell and make a good profit. Thankfully I found a dealer that was willing to sell his, but I paid for that to a tune of $250. The first one I found would have cost me $143, the dealer had them listed as a regular stocked item not fully realizing they would only get one, so the $143 price went to the first caller, again luck of the draw, end of story. The point here is, the second dealer made a pretty good profit off of that "Thank you". It was anticipated and expected that they did so and I was willing to pay the price.

So as I thought about it more, I am really OK with Mr. Meyer flipping his. He IS a member of the forum, and what he does with his property and his "thank you" is his business. In this case he has really done nothing immoral or unscrupulous, he's just trying to make a buck off of his good fortune. It's OK for dealers to make a profit, so why not us, or him in this case? If no one buys it at the exorbitant price he's asking, well I guess it will be in his collection until demand catches up. Chances are, sooner or later he will sell all of his over-priced (as far as I'm concerned) knives. Someone will be willing to pay the price. Yep, it kinda irks me on his prices, but then he's never made a sale to me either. And yes I have made him what I feel are fair offers, he declined every one I've ever made. They're his knives, he can ask whatever he wants, people don't have to pay those prices, but like me, they'll not get the knives either.

So tell me what you think. Flame me out, roast me in the pit wrong-thinkers!

You are 100% correct when you say he has the right to sell his knife for a profit. It doesn't bode well for forum members like Looney or lightning though. This guy doesn't contribute to the forum if anything he hurts it by selling fake boxes and I suspect he is also doing other dishonest alterations.

In other cases, though, he's been quite unscrupulous and immoral.

But back to this case only (810DLC-1601). While perhaps not immoral or unscrupulous -I could make a case to the contrary- it is in very poor form. There were only 125 of these produced...for Forum members only. These could not be bought from a dealer, regardless of price. Part of the blame can go to BM marketing/sales for the 10/order. But, damn, there are Forum members who truly wanted one to keep for themselves who never even had a shot at getting one, for various reasons.
And some members are immediately flipping them?! I'm positive this was not BM's intent when putting this project together for us.

Look, I don't really care if someone flips their Forum knife down the road at some point, but to buy one (or 10) for the express purpose of immediately turning a profit (at the expense of those who didn't get one in the extremely limited time window), is a bunch of crap. Such poor form, as I said. Would anyone be proud that such a person is part of our Forum community? You wanna sit next to such a person at the (Blade) Forum luncheon? Do you think that such a person participates in a "Pay It Forward" thread? Actually, in this instance, if someone's desire for profit is greater than their desire to participate in the spirit of the Forum, I'd consider banning them from the Forum... particularly the guy in question.

I agree that person like this to "flip" the rare item to just to make a profit disgust me. I don't mind that person be banned, but it may not make business sense to do it. Why a person who bought BKC product be penalized? Since it is business for BKC, I can't blame for 10 limit.

Personally speaking this lot of only 125, perhaps in the future for the product such as forum knife should have been imposed "Pre-purchase request per e-mail, having contributed to the forum above some posts numbers, and "could have imposed" 2 item per person limit or so.

Anyone who would buy extra forum knives with the intention of reselling them for a profit is a parasite. It's not illegal, it violates no contract except for the standard of integrity and civility. That's bad enough.

Benchmade took what they deemed to be reasonable steps to protect the financial viability of the project. They didn't break any promises. On the contrary, they took a risk to make a fantastic knife for us, with a very low upside for them. If I had been the guy at Benchmade setting up the sale, I would have done things differently, but maybe there is
nobody at Benchmade with the time to think about it that I have. Maybe they have other priorities for their resources in CS. I think if they had put Jason or Jimmy in charge of the sale, it would have been done differently.

Try to remember that Benchmade doesn't owe us anything. It is pretty amazing that they did this program, regardless of how it turned out for some folks. Also, remember that if they still had a few of the 810-1602s sitting on a shelf, it would be a lot harder to persuade them to do a 2017 Forum Knife.

This guy whoever he is did not invent the concept of "flipping" something, is'nt it what capitalism is based on? buy cheap and sell for a profit, this issue came up before with some else on the forum some time ago, some of you might remember.

On the ethical/social end of it, it's kosher but it stinks, I would'nt do it, I know most here would'nt but a person has the right to do whatever he pleases with his own property.

Lets look at another scenario, a forum member buys a forum knife, for some reason gets into some kind of financial bind, medical fees, mortgage payments, maybe loosing a job.. decides to flip his knives for a profit to pay off his bills.

Does that make him a bad person?
Does he have any moral obligation to advertise his private life and rationalizations to get our approval?

    No.

Let and let live, the price is too high don't buy it, the said person is not to your liking, don't do business with him.

BM does suffer from someone private "flipping" their knives at crazy prices, to them it's nothing more than good PR.

    Rant off!!!

I'd like to prepose closing this & the other 2016 FK Threads.
    Here are the facts
    1) BKC made a great knife, priced it below market as a thank you to folks on the Forum.
    2) distribution, in hind sight, would have been better if a smaller limit of knives were sold to each Forum Member. At least on day 1.
    3) if you look at the thread Who didn't get a Forum Knife. By my count there are 3 members who didn't get one & wanted one. There would be a 10 -12 more if not for Wuff & others who purchased additional & sold for what they paid to those who could not get through. I don't count LB or TD as they chose, according to their posts in that thread not to call in to buy. So for however bad you think the distribution system was 3 without isn't as bad as is being made out in the after action posts. If you research further only one of those contributed to the thread to build & often posts in other threads. The other two don't post often & if everyone just lurked this Forum would be a ghost town & shut down.
    4) I also suggested BKC build a few more for those who miss out. A few members were strongly against that as it would reduce the value of their FK. No one posted they too thought more knives was a good idea. Hey if your not selling yours what do you care if BKC made 6 more knives. How much is it going to reduce the value of our knives, I think very little.

So I am for closing down the thread. Start a new one as an example " how does the 810-1602 differ from prior 810 models" did anyone else notice the different size thumb studs? I want to move on to more up lifting threads. Thanks

I could care less if someone wants to flip their knife/collectable for a profit.

What irks me is that this forum knife was meant to be a symbol of appreciation for active forum members. It ended up being a free-for-all for anyone who caught wind of it. I predicted problems (caught a lot of flak for being vocal about my thoughts/ideas on member verification), but I never predicted a limit of ten per-person...
    Roll Eyes

Going forward, I think we should utilize MCM's, private message pre-order idea.. Keep a minimum order in place (two knives), and verify membership through the forum.

I agree with Mr. Hammer, if my vote counts.

I would also point out PM you accused me of posting / showing up merely to get a forum knife. I neither called that day nor tried to obtain one (as I stated in response to your accusation).

What or who determines whose active? I've been on the forum daily since I joined, but does that make me "active?" There are members that are on daily, weekly, monthly - just because they have been registered since 2001 doesn't make them an active contributing member.

We have to be careful with entitlements, there's enough of that going on in the world.
