/|\ As a lefty, other than a few models, BKC’s models are ambidextrous which is great, but you have to add to it the use of high quality materials & the customer service.

My fondness is not so well-thought-through, but I understand your point.

My first ‘real’, premium-grade manufactured knife was an Ares, gifted to me by a dear friend and mentor. At first, and over time as well, the Axis lock proved to be the most accessible and user-friendly mechanism. So my love of Benchmade knives is rooted in a sentimental attachment, with a practical appreciation of long term use. The BM knives I own are not necessarily perfect, but are exemplary in their form and function, each in their own way.

Totally hooked, and a fan for life.

My reasons: I just like knives. My interests and collection isn't limited to Benchmade. I am not a collector and I hard use all of my knives for different jobs. I am also an outdoors person which is a niche for Benchmade. Benchmade's designs, functionality, quality and materials puts them among the tops. They are also a progressive company that is always innovating which makes them exciting to follow. I also believe in supporting local skilled labor (local in a North American sense since I live in Canada) and I don't mind spending a little more for quality.

Price used to be just right. Good knives at a fair price. Now a days I’ll rarley buy a knife from a dealer...

Started out because Benchmade made "tactical" knives. Sure, they made hunting and utility style knives, but they also made knives called Mamba, Fer de Lance, and balisongs. As a budding student of Inayan Eskrima, I was drawn in much more than just needing something sharp. Benchmade continued their tactical tradition with production grade versions of folders by pioneers in the "tactical folder" genre like Pat Crawford, Ernie Emerson, Allen Elishewitz, and even Walter Brend and Al Mar.

When the liner lock was showed to be lacking, Benchmade was the first to come out with a superb lock for production folding knives, the Axis lock. Equaled, mebbe, but so far never surpassed. The balisong spirit is alive in the product line today. Benchmade knives are made with custom quality materials, often with superior production and design quality to hand made knives. Benchmade knives aren't made to sharpen a pencil or peel an apple, though they work very well for those menial tasks. They are made to enhance human potential for survival and success.

There's a little bit of bombast in there...but I think it gets the idea across.

    The AXIS lock.
Without this, I doubt I'd stick with the brand.

Started with balisong and mini AFCK.
710s, 941/3s, Ares, etc and the Axis lock continues the loyalty.

800 AFCK grabbed my attention. Then all of the Black Class autos and Nimravus I had in Iraq. (I bought a mixed case of autos from the Filipino mafia over there for $25/knife. Seriously. I gave most them away as gifts).

    Axis lock is killer.
Customer service sets the bar for all others.
Benchmade is all USA made (now) and cooler than Spyderco anyway.
This forum is pretty cool. Forum luncheon is really unique.

I don't know...damn, man...I just dig the brand...BM has made/makes a lot of cool knives. One look at my ivory 806 kind of says it all for me. Benchmade produced the AFCK and then improved it with the Axis-lock. Legendary stuff.

    ..and BEDLAM!

I vividly remember being a boy and begging for a good pocket knife to carry around, my mom said no, my dad thought it would be a compromise to get me one of those tiny victorinox Swiss Army knives, you now the ones that have tiny blade and file on one side and scissors on the other. Well i took what i could get and promptly proved my mom right that I would cut myself, and split my left thumb open to the knuckle, small doesn’t mean dull. 7 stitches later my Dad Wisely asked what i had been trying to do when i cut myself. I showed him the large stick of hardwood i was trying to whittle on. He raised his eyebrows and apologized for not giving me the right tool for the task I had in mind. Once my knuckle healed up and my mom cooled down, we started looking for a more appropriate tool. Eventually i was gifted a small buck knife, that was a little more suitable, i then went through a multi-tool stage and carried a leatherman WAVE. I had various other cheap throwaway knives and i was happy in my ignorance, i didn’t know any better. But then one day unknown to my my Dad had continued his search for an adequate blade, and he had picked up a Benchmade 940-ti. I fell in love i begged him for that knife, but nothing i could do would convince him that i deserved that blade. The the week of my high school graduation my Dad handed me a blue box with a butterfly on it and i got excited, he hadn’t sprung for the titanium, but i got my first 940 and i was hooked for life! I am left handed, but truly ambidextrous, the knife feels great in both hands, and Benchmade i pick up has that same familiar feeling of confidence and strength in the workmanship. That original 940 was picked up in 2005, and it is only now having it’s first treatment done by benchmade life sharp, though the 154cm had worn down a bit it was still a sharp and trusty blade 13 years later. I choose benchmade because i can trust that what i get is going to do what it is supposed to do for as long as i need it to do it. And then when it does need some love and care Benchmade will give it it’s due. Thanks benchmade for being a part of a father son bond, and being a brand i can be proud to buy, carry and use the heck out of!! Oh and American made in the Pacific Northwest!!!

I love knives in general, especially well made costly ones. When it comes to Benchmade though, there is just something special about this brand. I have owned numerous knives over the years, but the Benchmade Mini Barrage was the very first knife I paid more than a hundred dollars for. I never understood the hype about expensive pocket knives until I owned one.

    3 elements.

    1. AXIS lock. It allows me to Open and close the blade with one handed on either hand.

    2. Life sharp warranty / customer service for BKC production knives.

    3. Time proven steel in saber grind.

As a fellow lefty, the Axis lock is what keeps me coming back. I have tried the other versions (ball bearing lock, ARC lock, etc.), but they just don't cut it.

Wanted to try a nice knife after years of crappy Walmart knives. Had heard good things about Benchmades and bought a 530. It served me well until I lost it.

Benchmade appeals to me because of the variety. Many other knife makers in the same tier pretty much make only one knife. Painting with a broad brush there, but Spyderco all looks the same. Same for ZT, etc.

I also tend to be brand loyal. 7 Osprey packs. 3 Big Agnes tents. Same for my gun stuff, on and on.

So I get quality that I’m happy with for a price I’m comfortable with, and I generally know what to expect from the product.

Can’t forget the excellent warranty and customer service I have received.

So, personally, those are the factors that keep me coming back.

I didn't choose Benchmade - Benchmade chose me!

I was into classy gentlemen's folders, with great workmanship, pearl scales, that sorta thing. Then, I fell in love with the Benchmade 483, and the rest is history. I have all the Nakamura's, 100+ other Benchmade's, and several Gold Class. Oh my wallet... :P

    For me, this is why:

"The 3 M’s set Benchmade apart.

Materials: Premium blade steels and strong, durable handle materials are built to last.

Mechanisms: Patented locking mechanisms like our AXIS® lock provide reliability and enhanced function.

Manufacturing: Ultra-modern laser cutters and CNC machining centers offer the precision and control usually reserved for the aerospace industry.

We stand behind our products and craftsmanship. All Benchmade products are covered by our limited lifetime warranty and LifeSharp service."

That, and a plethora of fantastic designs to choose from. Benchmade has such a vast selection of truly excellent models under their umbrella. I can’t stay away.

I always try to buy American when I can, but not blindly, if the quality isn’t there, I won’t, and with BM, it definitely is.

BM never let me down, period.

BM does'nt use hype or BS stories as a marketing platform to sell less than medium quality products for outrages prices.

And I do support buying American.

Sums up what I was going to say, although I do wish G10 was standard as the handle material instead of optional.

i bought one of the first 710s back in ‘99. was a self purchased wedding present from my brand new wife. knew nothing about benchmade at the time other than that knife blew me away. was like nothing i’d ever owned.

i used it almost exclusively for 17 years, until it was stolen. now i’ve got a decent small pile to play with, and several more on my wish list. can’t think of the last time i used another brand knife for anything heavier duty than opening a letter or cooking. benchmades just do it for me. nothing else compares.
