Cerakote coming off?

Hi all. I received an Apparition 672SBK in a trade in another forum some months ago. I love the knife. It was my first assisted Benchmade and I liked the idea of a D2 steel blade.

The problem is that the Cerakote on one side of the blade is coming off, and it us NOT from rubbing anywhere. The blade sits dead center when closed and I have not used the knife for anything that would do that to a blade. I noticed a light spot in the cerakote when I first received it and when I oiled the blade for the first time, the spot came up. I hate to think that the person I traded with colored it in for the purpose of taking pictures and sent it knowing the he had intentionally covered up a problem.

My question is, how do I repair the issue?

I don't think that is a cerakoted blade. Just BM's regular BK coating which is durable but will wear with use.

I thought all Cerakote knives would be labelled as such, but the 2011 catalog says:

So ... I guess I have more Cerakoted Benchmades than I thought.

EDIT: So is there an easy test (e.g. visual) to see whether a BK knife has a Cerakote coating, if the year of manufacture can't be easily determined?

@OP: Regarding repair, you could see if Benchmade recoats blades. If not, you could see if Benchmade could replace the entire blade for you, or get a third party Cerakote company to apply a fresh coat. But AFAIK all coatings eventually show wear even if you aren't abusing them. Consider an uncoated blade or just live with the "love marks".

I could be wrong, but I believe the 672 came with black oxide, not black Cerakote. 672SBX??

The regular 670 (BK and SBK) was Cerakoted though.

I have a knife with carakote and it is also coming off after hard use. I think it sounds like a warranty issue. I'll call benchmade to refinish our knifes...haha.

I'm having trouble finding out what the warranty covers. I was wondering if it covered ceracoat. I sent Benchmade an email to ask them. My knives have been in there for sharpening and repair of an out the front model I had (they put a new spring in) I was happy with what they did. They've also sent me new pocket clips I think you can get to a year. I have graded to titanium pocket clip it does not break.

/|\ While every case is different, does not seem reasonable to expect a knife maker to be responsible to replace the coating on a blade. Just like grippy G10 smooths out from pocket wear over time.
I’ve never been a fan of blade coating because of look after use.
If your knife going to be a user, then just use it & the marring makes it yours. You could also sand off rest of the coating ( I think Tim has done this a few times & can likey give you tips on how to do it)
If it’s going to be a safe queen then send it into Benchmade for new blade & spa treatment .
Please keep us posted as to how you proceed.
