172 Tomahawk forcible entry tool?
Any other Firefighters on here who ever considered using a 172 as a forcible entry tool? My Gf bought me one awhile ago and im not sure if i want to carry it on my structure gear or not.

My only experience with firefighting is wild land... And a wide faced hatchet or 14"-18" machete is good. 0 -
I believe that is what the K5 hawk was designed for. I'm not a firefighter, so I don't know how much weight is too much weight, but the hawk is not light. I've never used it as a forced entry tool, but it sure is aces at smashing the hell out of anything I've tried.

Yeah i do a lot of Wildland firefighting as well, i never thought about using it for that... 0 -
compared to standard forcible entry tools that we use, it is much much lighter. You have one that you have used? because durability was definitely another question i had. I plan on beating the **** out of it. 0 -
Its a bit small for a fire fighter isnt it? 0 -
If an axe and halligan are not available, then..... why not give it a try. I carry way too much $hit in or on my turnouts to want to carry any more stuff. Correct tools for the job - get an axe and halligan off the truck. 0 -

Ive got to agree with that. Although with the tomahawk you dont have nearly the same reach that you would with an axe for searching, i feel like it could do a lot of good. with a pry on the end and an axe head and a pick. Although the Irons cant be beat.0 -
Conduct your own test. Carry it on your gear for 2 weeks or a month and document the times you actually use it. IF it sees plenty of regular use, you can justify carrying it, IF not, then you'll just be humping around more gear/weight for no real good reason. Turnouts and their pockets full of "what we think is necessary" junk, SCBA, helmet, boots, gloves, etc. already add more than enough weight to be carrying around............... it's in the 90's here today with 85% humidity - %ucking hot! I'm gonna go purge some excess weight out of turnouts right now. Have carried my pockets full for almost 23 years and alot of that stuff never sees the light of day.
Time to work smarter, not harder. If I need some sort of advantage or tool, I'll take the time to go get it. Remember, you are responding to some one else's emergency, not your own. Got to take care of yourself first.0
